Jersey City Episcopal Community Development Corporation Receives $75,000 from TD Charitable Foundation to Support Affordable
Housing in New Jersey

November 13, 2009 – Jersey City, N.J. –  Jersey City Episcopal Community Development Corporation (JCECDC) of Jersey City, N.J., has received a $75,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation's annual "Housing for Everyone" grant competition. The funding will be used to support affordable housing initiatives in Jersey City.

Now in its fifth year, the "Housing for Everyone" grant competition offers housing non-profits a chance to win funds for projects that help to stabilize the housing environment in communities where TD Bank does business. Grants ranged from $10,000 to $100,000.  Jersey City Episcopal Community Development Corporation was one of 56 winners selected for funding out of nearly 500 applicants.

“We are ecstatic about continuing our partnership with TD Bank’s Charitable Foundation- a corporate partner that has displayed a tremendous amount of support for our affordable housing and community development strategies in Jersey City. The investment received through the 2009 Housing for Everyone Competition will be critical to the implementation of the Neighborhood Stabilization Strategy, which in the next 2-3 years will focus on stabilizing some of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Jersey City, whose progress and revitalization has been compromised due to a disproportionate amount of foreclosures and abandonment in the past year,” said Carol Mori, Executive Director of the Jersey City CDC.  “This will be accomplished with an investment of over $16 million in collaboration with our public and private partners, to develop close to 100 new units of housing for low, moderate and middle income families by acquiring and developing derelict properties.  Our efforts will also include home buyer education and foreclosure prevention services to over 150 people in the next year.”

JCECDC was awarded the grant for their Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which involves the development of 93 units of affordable mixed income housing, housing education and foreclosure prevention over a three year period. Most of the housing units include the acquisition, rehab/new construction and resale/rental of foreclosed or abandoned properties. This effort will help curb the effects of foreclosure and abandonment that are jeopardizing decades of community development work in this area.

To date, JCECDC has developed over 172 units of affordable housing and provides first time home buyer education free of charge to the public.  Currently, JCECDC is selling 7 affordable condominiums and 15 two family homes to moderate income households.  For more information about JCECDC housing programs contact realestate@jcecdc.org , 201-209-9301 ext. 304 or view www.jcecdc.org/realestate.

Through the "Housing for Everyone" program, the TD Charitable Foundation donated a total $2 million in 2009, and has invested nearly $5.3 million in affordable housing to date.
